Birds are just like us, they prefer to dine at clean establishments! So keep your feeder clean and make sure your seed and suet are always fresh. These are the 2 most important things you can do to insure that lots of birds will visit your feeders.
We recommend cleaning all of your bird feeders at least every 30 days. To freshen up your bird feeders, take them all down and discard any old or moldy food in or around the feeder. Scrub them in hot water with a 10% bleach or mild detergent solution. Allow them to completely dry before refilling with fresh seed. We like to let ours dry in the warm sun for a day or two. If your feeder says its dishwasher safe, go ahead and run it through a cycle! Check out our Cleaning Brushes and all-natural Cleaners.
All bird seed, suet and nectar can go bad, so keep a careful eye on these items, and if they look or smell bad, please discard. Your birds won’t eat them anyways!
Also, consider moving or rotating your feeders to different parts of your backyard. Freshen up the area under your feeders by raking away old seed and discarded hulls. This will prevent any build up of spoiled food or droppings under your feeders.
HUMMINGBIRD & NECTAR FEEDERS
As with seed feeders, be sure to clean your hummingbird feeders regularly and replace the solution at least every week. Clean your nectar feeders with hot water and liquid soap or a 10% bleach solution. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before refilling. If your feeder is dishwasher safe, you can also wash it in the dishwasher. It is extremely important to change your solution more often (every 2-3 days) when the weather is hot or consistently over 60 degrees.
It is a good idea to clean out all your birdhouses after each nesting. Fall is the best time to plan this activity after the mating season has passed. It is recommended that you clean your houses at least once a year. Remove all old nesting material and discard in your trash. If the house is extremely soiled, you might want to clean it with a light water and soap mixture or a light bleach and water mixture. Use a stiff brush to clean the inside and outside of your house. It is important to rinse your house well with clear water, then allow to dry thoroughly in the sun before re-mounting. Many folks will leave their birdhouses up through the winter months so other birds can use them as a roosting shelter from bad weather. If you do leave your house up over the winter, we do recommend this same cleaning procedure in early spring before the next mating season gets underway.
THE BEST FEEDERS FOR THE SAFETY AND HEALTH OF YOUR BIRDS
Tubular feeders are the best design for keeping your seed clean and will prevent birds from sitting in or leaving droppings in the food. These sanitary feeders help protect your seed from moisture and require that birds eat at the individual ports. These feeders are easy to fill and clean. They can even be cleaned in your dishwasher!
